MIPP boycott undermines PN’s multiracial ambitions, says analyst

A decision by the Malaysian Indian People’s Party to sit out the Melaka election risks reinforcing the perception that Perikatan Nasional remains aligned with Malay-Muslim political interests, say analysts.

Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said MIPP’s withdrawal highlighted the lack of influence wielded by PN’s non-Malay component parties in seat allocation negotiations with Barisan Nasional.

He said the decision reflected MIPP’s dissatisfaction with PN’s failure to safeguard the interests of its component parties. “By opting out entirely rather than accepting marginal seats with no realistic prospect of victory, MIPP has made its position clear: it is a principled party with dignity that will not be sidelined,” he told FMT.

Mazlan said MIPP’s absence could undermine PN’s efforts to project itself as a multiracial coalition, especially as PH and BN showcase multi-ethnic cooperation.

He also said PAS, PN’s dominant party, was seen as having capitulated to Umno by accepting an allocation of just seven seats for PN and its allies.

Mazlan said PAS appeared to regard MIPP as having little electoral impact, particularly in attracting Indian voters, although MIPP’s presence remained valuable in reinforcing PN’s national image.

He said MIPP’s withdrawal could affect Indian support in Gadek and Bemban, where Indian voters make up a significant proportion of the electorate.

PN structural weakness

Universiti Malaya academic Awang Azman Pawi said MIPP’s withdrawal reflected deeper structural weaknesses within PN rather than an isolated disagreement over seat allocations.

He said tensions between PAS and Bersatu, as well as leadership disputes and competing electoral strategies, had left smaller component parties increasingly feeling sidelined.

“This suggests that PN is experiencing a crisis of coalition governance, political trust and internal power-sharing,” he said.

The MIPP decision was announced on Oct 29 by party president P Punithan after failing to reach an agreement with the PN leadership.

He said the party would not compromise its principles simply to secure seats, adding that the interests and voices of the Indian community deserved proper recognition and representation.

Nominations for the state election take place on Oct 31, with early voting on Nov 10 and polling on Nov 14. In the 2021 state election, BN won 21 seats, PH secured five and PN won two.
