2027: Kano politician in soup over alleged display of firearm at rally

The police have arrested a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aminu Warkal, for allegedly displaying a firearm at a political event in the state.
Mr Warkal was filmed firing shots into the air during a political rally in the Janbulo area of Gwale Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson in Kano, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said in a statement that officers on routine cyber patrol intercepted a viral video clip showing Mr Warkal flaunting what appears to be a pump-action rifle in front of a crowd.
Mr Kiyawa said the action contravenes the Firearms Act and threatens public safety.
“The alleged unlawful display of a firearm, if established, constitutes a clear violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act and is capable of inciting fear, intimidating members of the public, and breaching public peace and security,” the statement read.
“Following a directive from the Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori, Mr Warkal was summoned to the Command Headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

“He is currently being interrogated by detectives at the State Intelligence Department (SID).
Reacting to the incident, Mr Bakori warned against political thuggery and brandishing of weapons, emphasising that no individual is above the law.
“He urged political actors, party supporters, and stakeholders across the state to maintain order and strictly adhere to the Electoral Act, the Firearms Act, and other extant laws governing public conduct”, Mr Kiyawa said
The police assured residents of their commitment to safeguarding lives and property before, during, and after the political season.
