Sam Pinkleton to Direct Broadway Revival of ‘Annie’

Annie will return to Broadway in fall 2027 to mark the musical’s 50th anniversary.

Sam Pinkleton, the Tony-winning director of Oh, Mary! and of The Rocky Horror Show, will direct the musical, which is produced by Michael Alden and Hal Luftig, Cathy Dantchik, & Kevin Connor for Halcyon Theatricals. Casting has not yet been announced.

“If you ask any of my closest friends what I love more than anything on the planet, everyone will have the same answer: Annie,” said Pinkleton. “Annie is everything I love about New York City: gutsy, fearless, and funny as hell. It’s a perfectly constructed musical comedy that my collaborators and I will run toward with joy and abandon – with open hearts and total adoration for this legendary show that has made generations fall in love with musicals.”

Pinkleton is also set to direct the star-studded Encores production of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, with Ayo Edebiri, Danielle Brooks and David Hyde Pierce, in February 2027.

The musical, featuring music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and a book by Thomas Meehan, premiered at the Goodspeed Opera House in 1976 before a pre-Broadway engagement at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. It opened on Broadway on April 21, 1977, and later won seven Tony Awards, including best musical, best original score, best book of a musical, best actress in a musical (Dorothy Loudon), best choreography, best scenic design and best costume design.

The show has been revived on Broadway twice before, in 1997 (where Sutton Foster played A Star To Be) and in 2012 for a two-year run that saw Jane Lynch join the cast as Miss Hannigan and Sadie Sink make her Broadway debut as the alternate Annie and the orphan Duffy.
