SINGAPORE, Sept 28 — Telecommunications company Simba has disclosed a data breach affecting 23,549 customers, with compromised information including names, identity card numbers and dates of birth.

CNA reported that according to the company, investigations found that the affected data also included customers' mobile phone numbers and email addresses linked to Simba service registrations.

In a statement issued on Sept 25, Simba said it discovered the incident a day earlier and had since contained and resolved the breach. The company stressed that no credit card or bank account information was at risk.

Simba said there was currently no indication that any of the exposed data had been maliciously misused.

“Simba is treating this incident seriously and have swiftly resolved it,” the company said, adding that immediate steps had been taken to review existing security measures aimed at protecting its core infrastructure and systems.

The telco also said it was working with relevant authorities in relation to the breach.

Customers affected by the incident are being notified progressively through email, with the notification process expected to be completed within a week.

Responding to queries from CNA, Singapore's Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) said it was aware of the incident and had launched an investigation.

The latest breach comes as organisations continue to face increasing scrutiny over the protection of personal data, particularly information such as identity card numbers and dates of birth that can be used in identity-related fraud.
