New Delhi declaration: Brics wants calm, security and stable energy flows

NEW DELHI, Sept 13 — Brics leaders stated in a joint declaration on Saturday the need to strengthen energy security, ensure stability of energy markets and uninterrupted supply of energy resources.

“We recognise that energy security is a crucial foundation for social and economic development, national security and the welfare of all nation,” the declaration following the New Delhi summit read.

The declaration also emphasised the need for energy security through stable supplies and protection of infrastructure.

“We highlight the need to enhance energy security by ensuring energy market stability and maintaining undisrupted flows of energy from diverse sources, strengthening value chains, ensuring resilience and protection of critical energy infrastructure, including cross-border infrastructure,” the document said.

Brics leaders have also called for the creation of more reliable and stable supply chains that take into account the needs of developing countries, according to the New Delhi declaration.

It said that Brics leaders are concerned by ongoing conflicts in the world, as well as the polarisation and fragmentation of the world order, according to the leaders’ declaration of the association’s summit in New Delhi published on Saturday.

“We express concern about ongoing conflicts in many parts of the world and the current state of polarisation and fragmentation in the international order,” the declaration read.

Brics countries call on the international community to respond to challenges through diplomatic measures, according to the declaration.

The declaration further stated that Brics countries expressed concern over growing risks linked to the nuclear threat and conflict.

“We express concern about the growing risks of nuclear danger and conflict,” the document read.

Brics countries also emphasised the need to step up the disarmament and arms control system, according to the declaration.

Brics leaders also highlighted the deliberate attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities subject to IAEA safeguards, according to a declaration adopted at the group’s summit in New Delhi on Saturday.

“We express serious concern over deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities under full safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in violation of international law and relevant resolutions of the IAEA.

“Nuclear safeguards, safety, and security must always be upheld, including in armed conflicts, to protect people and the environment from harm,” the document read.
