Penang targets US expansion to cement status as global chip hub

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 28 — Penang is ramping up its efforts to attract fresh American capital and encourage existing US multinationals to expand their footprint in the state.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow will lead a strategic trade mission to the United States from today until October 5.

Organised by InvestPenang, the mission focuses on renewing ties with the corporate headquarters of American firms already operating in Penang.

“This effort aims to encourage the expansion of their Penang sites and attract new investments,” a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office confirmed.

Chow will pitch Penang’s latest industrial advancements to US executives, highlighting key initiatives such as Penang Silicon Design @5km+ and the Penang ATE Campus. The discussions will also cover critical infrastructure upgrades and policy shifts designed to streamline the investment process.

The state is targeting high growth sectors, including the semiconductor industry, integrated circuit (IC) design, advanced packaging, and equipment manufacturing. Other priority areas include medical devices and global business services (GBS).

The itinerary includes a series of high level meetings and site visits with corporate headquarters, providing a platform to showcase Penang’s innovation and long term competitiveness as a premier investment destination.

Chow expressed confidence in the mission, noting his commitment to strengthening ties with American investors to secure tangible economic gains for the state.
