Rivian Automotive acquires Third Dimension AI as it works toward full autonomy

Rivian Automotive (RIVN) announced the acquisition Third Dimension AI for an undisclosed amount. Third Dimension AI was described as a pioneer in AI-powered 3D spatial generation, which has developed a simulation platform that transforms real-world data into high-fidelity, controllable 3D environments and enables complex driving scenarios to be recreated and varied at scale.
The electric vehicle maker said the strategic transaction will accelerate synthetic data generation and full-world simulation for Rivian's driver assistance and self-driving systems. "By bringing this team and platform in-house, Rivian will further expand its physical and virtual data flywheel, enabling its autonomy models to simulate complex driving conditions without waiting for rare real-world edge cases to occur," highlighted Rivian (RIVN).
Third Dimension's leadership and technical talent will join Rivian's (RIVN) Autonomy research and engineering teams.
Looking ahead, Rivian Automotive (RIVN) is progressing towards autonomy, with plans to deploy it in the robotaxi versions of its R2 SUV.
Shares of Rivian (RIVN) are down more than 20% over the last six weeks.
