The movie industry has been in a weird spot for a while, and one of the largest debates is about whether the superhero genre killed cinema or not. Whatever fans' thoughts are, they can't deny that the MCU has put butts in seats over the past couple of decades. Spider-Man: Brand New Day was a massive success, and Avengers: Doomsday is set to be even larger, which defines the popularity of Marvel and their films.
The MCU has come under criticism over the past few years because of their disappointing TV shows and flawed movies. However, no one can deny its influence, with plenty of its movies being renowned by fans and critics alike. That is why this list will highlight MCU movies that are undisputed masterpieces based on aspects such as entertainment value, story, acting, fan opinion, critical acclaim, and overall quality.
'Thunderbolts*' (2025)
While the past couple of MCU movies were hits, the 2020s haven't been kind to the franchise, but that doesn't mean they don't have any masterpieces. Directed by Jake Schreier, who will helm the upcoming X-Men movie, Thunderbolts* is the crown jewel of the modern MCU. A ragtag group of failed heroes have nothing else to live for, but when they are all assigned to kill each other, they find a new hero who might be the key to saving them.
While Thunderbolts wasn't commercially successful, it is undoubtedly the greatest written Marvel movie of the decade. In a decade of inconsistency, this movie stands firm as a masterpiece that avoids the typical MCU bloat and CGI boss battle. Instead, the key aspect of Thunderbolts is its emotional, relatable, and fascinating narrative that puts the characters and their struggles at the center, building a heartfelt classic from a stale genre.
'Doctor Strange' (2016)
The MCU was at its peak around the mid to late 2010s, but because there were so many memorable classics, some great movies are still underrated, including Doctor Strange. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the titular character who starts off as an arrogant surgeon who, when in a car crash, must find salvation in spiritualism, which takes him along a psychedelic path that will make him the world's strongest sorcerer.
Doctor Strange is universally agreed to be a great movie, but when it came out at a time of the biggest films, it flew under the radar. Still, the visuals and pure spectacle of the cinematography and graphics established themselves as a feast for the eyes that is more than just eye candy, but a banquet that all fans can indulge in. With one of the greatest MCU movie endings, Doctor Strange is perfect from start to finish and an undisputed masterpiece.
'The Avengers' (2012)
Before the grand films in the third and fourth phases of the MCU, Phase One established the key heroes and their narratives, including the conclusion of the phase and the beginning of the rest of the universe: The Avengers. The Infinity Stones possess unparalleled power that, when in the wrong hands, can spell disaster. That is exactly what happens when Loki (Tom Hiddleston) gets ahold of one, prompting Earth's Mightiest Heroes to assemble and save New York.
The MCU is widely viewed as a cinematic event, and that is because The Avengers set the precedent, and it made such a high bar that it is difficult to top. Each character gets time to shine while further cementing their character, including plenty of dynamics and relationships that would become staple points of the MCU. The Avengers is a culmination of the early MCU movies and a massive event with plenty of action, intrigue, and epicness.
'Guardians of the Galaxy' (2014)
James Gunn is now onto bigger things as the head of the DCU, planning the future of the cinematic universe, but many still view him as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy. When a high price is put on a mysterious artifact, a bunch of space-faring misfits set out to find it. But after fighting it out for a bit, they realize they need to work together to get it back and stop it from going into the wrong hands.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a sci-fi masterclass that took a group of unheard-of characters and turned them into household names through excellent character work and endearing personalities. It isn't just a great superhero movie; it is among the greatest film trilogies of all time, especially the first. The characters, sci-fi extravaganza, and excellent score put together a masterpiece that everyone can get behind.
Collider Exclusive · 8 Questions · 2 Minutes Which MCU Character Is Your Best Friend? Steve Rogers · Tony Stark · Peter Parker · Shuri
Pick where you meet, what they text you at two in the morning, what they hand you on your birthday and what the two of you keep arguing about. Four very different people are waiting on the other side: the one who never leaves, the one who is exhausting and worth it, the one who replies in four seconds flat, and the one who will roast you and then fix your life.
🛡️Steve Rogers(Captain America)
🛠️Tony Stark(Iron Man)
🕸️Peter Parker(Spider-Man)
🐆Shuri(Black Panther)
01
Where do the two of you meet? Nobody in this universe makes a friend somewhere normal.
02
Your phone lights up at two in the morning. What does it say? You find out what kind of friend somebody is by what they send at that hour.
03
It is your birthday. What do they hand you? The present is never really about the present.
04
What does a good Saturday with them actually look like? Superheroes have days off, and this is how they spend them.
05
You have your worst day in years. What do they do about it? This is the part of a friendship nobody puts in the trailer.
06
Every real friendship has one fight it keeps having. What is yours? The thing you argue about is usually the thing you like most about them.
07
The alarm goes off and you are both in the field. What is your job? You get one role on the team, and it says a lot about who you want next to you.
08
Ten years on, what do you want this friendship to be? Eight questions in, this is the one that decides who picks up the phone.
The Line Is Ringing Your Best Friend Is…
Four people, four completely different ideas of what it means to have somebody in your corner. Here is who picked up, what they would ask of you, and what you would get back.
Steve Rogers
You want the friend who does not leave. Steve is the one who turns up at the door without being asked, who remembers what you said you were worried about, and who has never once made you audition for his attention.
- His entire character is built on a single sentence, which is that he will not abandon somebody just because it has become expensive to keep them.
- He is far funnier than people give him credit for, and the joke is almost always at his own expense rather than yours.
- The friendship comes with a cost, since being close to Steve means being dragged into fights that were never yours and being glad about it later.
- You would get a friend who tells you the hard thing to your face and then defends you to everybody else in the room.
Tony Stark
You want the friend who is genuinely exhausting and completely worth it. Tony will forget your birthday, then build you something at four in the morning that you did not know you needed, and hand it over as though it were nothing.
- He is bad at saying the warm thing out loud, so he says it in hardware instead, which is why everybody around him ends up with upgraded everything.
- Being his friend means putting up with the disappearing, the deflecting and the jokes that arrive about ninety seconds too early.
- What you get in return is somebody who will spend an unreasonable amount of money and effort on a problem the moment it becomes yours.
- He is the loudest person in the room and the one most likely to be quietly panicking about all of you.
Peter Parker
You want the friend who replies in four seconds and apologises for it. Peter is earnest in a way that is almost unfashionable, and he will take on far more than he can carry rather than admit that he is struggling.
- He is the only one on this list who needs looking after as much as he looks after you, and that balance is exactly what makes it a real friendship.
- Nobody in the MCU is better at the small stuff, from remembering the thing you were nervous about to showing up with food you did not ask for.
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived in July 2026 and put him back where he works best, which is broke, local and carrying the weight on his own.
- You would get a friend who is sincerely, embarrassingly happy for you when something goes right, with no edge to it at all.
Shuri
You want the friend who insults your shoes, fixes your phone and then quietly rearranges your entire life for the better. Shuri does not do soft reassurance, and that is the reason you would believe her when she says you are fine.
- She is the smartest person in almost any room she walks into and treats that as a reason to tease you rather than a reason to lecture you.
- The teasing is the affection. When Shuri stops making fun of you, something has gone seriously wrong and you should probably ask her about it.
- Her story is the one on this list that goes somewhere genuinely dark, which is what turned her from a scene stealer into the emotional centre of the films.
- You would get a friend who never pities you, never softens the truth, and never once lets you take yourself too seriously.
'Black Panther' (2018)
The late Chadwick Boseman was a fantastic actor responsible for countless great performances, but he is most associated with Black Panther. The Kingdom of Wakanda isn't known to most people, but one man wants to prove this to the world, forcing them to share their advanced technology with the rest of the world. However, his extreme tactics present a battle for the title of king of Wakanda.
MCU movies are incredible, but they aren't usually anything worth awards or Oscar buzz. However, that changed with Black Panther, which earned multiple nominations because of its talented cast and poignant story. The acting is some of the best in the entire MCU and the narrative also reigns supreme as an intriguing tale of two ideologies that are both right and wrong, which is seen in the characters and their battles.
'Iron Man' (2008)
After twenty years, the MCU has built up its universe to create a cinematic marvel that almost everyone in this entire world is aware of, and it all started with Iron Man. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a playboy billionaire weapons manufacturer, but after his capture, he faces the consequences and the dark truth behind his products. Turning over a new leaf, he wants to help the world by becoming the titular superhero.
The MCU isn't known for being a grounded superhero universe, especially in the modern era where aliens are everywhere. However, Iron Man was a perfect first film to blend elements of the comics, general cinematography excellence, and the rule of cool to create the beginning of something spectacular. Tony is an eccentric personality and adds to the epicness of the movie, not to mention that Iron Man boasts a solid pace that proves it is a perfect Marvel film.
'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' (2014)
Marvel is all about superheroes fighting massive CGI fights, but it seems their best movies are the ones that are more grounded, like the espionage thriller of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With Captain America (Chris Evans) now in the modern day, he gets accustomed to his new life. But some things never change, with the threat of Hydra lurking in the shadows, including a familiar face that he must face.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a superhero movie that disguises itself as an epic espionage thriller with gritty action and political complexities. It takes inspiration from classic spy films and weaves its superhero aspects to get the best of both worlds. The grounded nature and visceral action help the intrigue and intensity of the movie, but it doesn't get in the way of its mature themes that are rare for MCU movies to feature.
'Avengers: Infinity War' (2018)
The MCU started with Iron Man, later evolved into The Avengers, and will soon result in Avengers: Doomsday. However, the pinnacle of the universe of Marvel's storytelling resulted in Avengers: Infinity War. After years of buildup, Thanos (Josh Brolin) finally has all the Infinity Stones, and he plans to use them to eradicate half of Earth's population to satisfy his own unfounded beliefs. Luckily, the Avengers are here to stop him, right?
Winter Soldier is arguably better written, but Avengers: Infinity War represents what the MCU is, defining the main attraction of the universe. As the quintessential MCU masterpiece, it has everything fans could want, from CGI action to character team-ups, comic fan service, and pure, unfiltered awe and spectacle. Infinity War is the best MCU movie, and almost every single fan will agree.
