Man with 10 previous criminal offences shot after police chase

KUALA LUMPUR: A man with 10 previous criminal offences was shot and injured after leading police on a chase from Petaling Jaya towards Sungai Buloh while driving dangerously and ramming other vehicles yesterday.
Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said the man, who is in his 30s, was driving a Proton Wira when police apprehended him.
He said police received a report on the incident around 6.42pm.
"The suspect drove aggressively and dangerously, ramming other vehicles before he was apprehended by police at the scene.
"He sustained injuries after being shot by police and is receiving treatment at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC)," he said in a statement today.
Shamsudin said a policeman was also injured in the incident and had received treatment.
Checks revealed that the suspect had 10 previous police offences, comprising six drug-related cases and four criminal cases.
Police also found drugs and a toy weapon resembling a pistol in the vehicle. A urine test has yet to be conducted as the suspect is still receiving medical treatment.
Shamsudin said police were investigating why the suspect fled when officers attempted to stop him.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties, Section 279 for rash or dangerous driving and Section 307 for attempted murder.
Investigations are also being conducted under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960 and Sections 39B and 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Shamsudin said an application for a remand order against the suspect was scheduled to be made at UMMC today.
Videos of the incident have since gone viral on social media, showing a foot chase and several police vehicles at the scene.
