Man rams traffic policeman, injures him while fleeing Ipoh roadblock

IPOH, Sept 24 — A traffic policeman suffered a fractured arm and leg after being rammed by a car that attempted to flee during a roadblock inspection on Jalan Silibin, here, this morning.

Ipoh District Police Chief ACP Muhammad Najib Hamzah said that during the 9.45am incident, police managed to arrest the 29-year-old man after his car skidded at the Taman Wing Onn traffic light junction.

He added that initial investigations revealed that during the inspection, a traffic officer from the Ipoh District Police Headquarters (IPD) ordered the car to stop, but the driver failed to comply with the instruction and sped away from the location.

“Three traffic personnel then pursued the car. Upon arriving at the traffic light area near the Perak State Secretariat (SUK) Building, the driver entered the left lane before making a sudden U-turn and ramming into a traffic personnel.

“The driver then fled towards Gunung Lang, and upon reaching the area near McDonald’s Gunung Lang, the driver drove against the flow of traffic before his car skidded at the Taman Wing Onn traffic light junction,” he said in a statement today.

Muhammad Najib said that as a result of the incident, the traffic personnel suffered a broken left arm and right leg and was taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) for further treatment.

He added that further investigations on the male driver revealed that the suspect did not possess a driver’s licence, the vehicle’s road tax had expired, and an initial urine screening test on the suspect came back positive for methamphetamine.

“Further investigations are still underway, and the case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

Earlier, an 18-second video went viral on social media showing a white vehicle moving at high speed, hitting a road divider, driving against the flow of traffic, and crashing into several vehicles on Jalan Kuala Kangsar, Ipoh. — Bernama
