Bafana Mahungela convicted of murdering Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts

Bafana Mahungela, 23, has been convicted of murdering Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts, bringing a significant development in the long-running case that shocked South Africa.

Kluyts was 34.

The Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg found Mahungela guilty of murder, kidnapping, attempted rape and defeating the administration of justice.

Kluyts was murdered on 29 October 2023 while participating in a MyRun event at George Lea Park in Sandton.

Welcomed the conviction

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the conviction, saying it represented an important step towards securing justice for Kluyts and her family.

State Advocates Siyabonga Futshana and Leisha Surendra led the prosecution during the lengthy trial. The State presented evidence relating to Mahungela’s movements on the day of the murder, alongside forensic and other corroborating evidence.

Several expert witnesses were also called to testify, strengthening the State’s case against Bafana Mahungela.

According to the NPA, the prosecution relied largely on circumstantial evidence. However, the court found that the evidence had to be considered cumulatively and ultimately pointed conclusively to Mahungela’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court also ruled that video footage presented by the State had been properly authenticated and was therefore admissible as evidence.

A facial comparison expert further testified and identified Mahungela as the person depicted in the footage presented to the court.

Important milestone

The NPA said the conviction followed meticulous preparation and a diligent presentation of the State’s case, with relevant evidence placed before the court for consideration.

The conviction brings an important milestone in the case following Kluyts’ death and offers a measure of justice to her family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.

Mahungela remains before the court for sentencing.

The matter has been postponed to 27 October 2026 for sentencing proceedings.

The NPA said it remained committed to prosecuting serious and violent crimes and ensuring that victims and their families receive justice through the criminal justice system.
