Batam airport cancels five flights amid Anak Krakatau eruption

Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam canceled five flights on Saturday because of disruptions caused by Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruption, prompting airlines to adjust schedules on affected routes.

PT Bandara Internasional Batam President Director Annang Setia Budhi said the cancellations involved flights connected to airports affected by volcanic ash.

Several airports temporarily suspended operations Sunday, including Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Radin Inten II International Airport in Lampung and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta.

The affected CGK-BTH flights were Super Air Jet flight IU-850 and Citilink Indonesia flight QG-940, according to airport management.

The affected BTH-CGK flights were Batik Air flight ID-6863, Super Air Jet flight IU-851 and Citilink Indonesia flight QG-941.

Annang said airport management was coordinating with airlines and other parties to prepare for a possible buildup of passengers affected by flight disruptions.

Management was monitoring passenger flows and strengthening terminal facilities and staffing to provide travelers with information, services and assistance during disruptions.

Hang Nadim management continued assessing developments and their impact on flight operations, with adjustments based on safety considerations and the latest information from aviation authorities.

Passengers were advised to check flight status and schedules through their airlines’ official channels before traveling to the airport, including possible changes, delays or cancellations.

Mount Anak Krakatau recorded its most intense eruption of 2026 on Friday night, Sept. 4, with continuous activity continuing into Saturday, according to the Geological Agency.

The eruption began at 11:07 p.m. local time and involved a lava fountain. One eruption earthquake was recorded, with a maximum amplitude of 70 millimeters and a duration of 21,600 seconds.

The Geological Agency said the Sept. 4-5 eruption sequence had the highest intensity since Anak Krakatau was placed on Alert status.

The agency said volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau was observed spreading through the atmosphere across Banten, West Java, Jakarta, Lampung and Bengkulu.

Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Alert, with authorities continuing to monitor its activity and potential impacts on aviation and surrounding areas.
