2027: Five media houses to hold Lagos governorship debate November 8

Translate

The Nigeria Debate Consortium has scheduled the Lagos State governorship debate ahead of the 2027 general elections for Sunday, November 8, 2026.

The Lagos debate, the first in a series planned for some battleground states, will take place at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, in the Lekki area of the state.

It is expected to feature governorship candidates from different political parties, who will present their agendas, defend their policy choices and respond to questions on issues affecting Lagos residents.

This was disclosed in a statement titled ‘Lagos 2026: Nigeria Debate Consortium Sets November 8 for Governorship Debate,’ and made available to PUNCH Online on Sunday.

The Nigeria Debate Consortium is a collaboration of five leading Nigerian media organisations made up of Channels Television, TVC News, PUNCH Newspaper, TheCable and Vanguard Newspaper, committed to strengthening democratic participation, electoral accountability and informed public discourse through credible, non-partisan electoral debates.

The debate will span several areas, including transportation, infrastructure, security, housing, education, healthcare, job creation and economic growth.

“The Nigeria Debate Consortium, comprising Channels Television, TVC News, Punch Newspaper, The Cable and Vanguard Newspaper, opens the series of debates for the 2027 election season with the Lagos governorship debate and will end with the presidential debate/townhall.

“It is the first in the series of debates in some battleground states of Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. The debate will be held on Sunday, November 8, at 7:00 p.m. at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, Plot 18, Providence Road, beside Keystone Bank, Marwa, Lekki, Lagos State.

“The initiative will provide a credible, non-partisan platform for participating governorship candidates to present their agendas, defend their policy choices and respond to questions on the issues that matter most to Lagos residents.

“From transportation and infrastructure to security, housing, education, healthcare, job creation and economic growth, the debate will put the candidates’ ideas, priorities and readiness to govern under public scrutiny,” the statement partly read.

According to Channels Television, the debate reflects the media’s responsibility to inform the electorate and strengthen democratic accountability.

“Voters deserve more than campaign promises; they deserve clear answers, credible plans and an opportunity to assess those seeking their mandate. This debate will place issues, ideas and the future of Lagos at the centre of the electoral conversation. Our responsibility is to help citizens make informed choices based on what candidates propose and how convincingly they demonstrate their capacity to deliver,” the media outlet stated.

Also, TVC News emphasised the importance of issue-based engagement in the democratic process, saying, “A governorship debate is an opportunity for candidates to move beyond political rhetoric and demonstrate the substance of their vision for Lagos. Citizens need to understand not only what candidates promise, but how they intend to deliver.

“By creating a fair platform for this engagement, we are helping to promote accountability and a more informed electorate.”

The statement noted that the governorship candidates will be treated fairly, with the same rules, speaking times and moderation standards.

The debate, which will be moderated by experienced journalists, will be based on “established professional standards, with fairness, neutrality, equal opportunity and editorial independence as guiding principles.”

The Consortium also noted that the debate will be broadcast to national and digital audiences through the participating media organisations’ platforms, as it called on Lagos residents, particularly eligible voters, young people, Civil Society Organisations, professional groups and the business community.

In an interview with The PUNCH in July 2026, Lagos State Deputy Governor and APC governorship candidate for the 2027 election, Obafemi Hamzat, explained his plans to deepen infrastructure, strengthen security through state police, address flooding, housing and waste management, and build what he describes as a more organised Lagos.

Also, the African Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, stated that his administration will provide Lagosians with affordable housing units and a platform to report any cases of intimidation by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force or by thugs if elected governor in 2027.

Also, on October 1, 2026, the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Lagos, Funso Doherty, vowed to make education and healthcare accessible at no cost within his first 100 days in office, if given the mandate to govern the state in 2027.
