KPWKM seeks higher Budget 2027 allowances for disabled workers and PDK staff, says Nancy

SHAH ALAM, Sept 22 — The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) has proposed higher allowances for disabled workers and staff at Community Rehabilitation Centres (PDK) under Budget 2027, the minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said.

She said the ministry was committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities (PwD) and those involved in caregiving received appropriate support, particularly to improve their quality of life.

“Regarding the allowances for PDK trainers, we have proposed increasing them, but approval has not yet been given. We have to wait for the Budget announcement to know whether it will be approved.

“Most PDKs depend on external donations and support from elected representatives in their respective areas. That is why elected representatives often raise the matter and call for higher allowances to help the communities they serve,” she said.

She said this at a press conference after officiating the closing ceremony of the Able for Disable Programme and the presentation of certificates for the AEON Job Coach Introduction Course 2026 here today.

Nancy said ahead of the tabling of Budget 2027, her ministry also hoped its proposal to strengthen the care economy would be approved.

“We want it to become a successful programme for those in need, including PwD and those caring for PwD, so we hope the proposals we have made will receive approval,” she said.

In her speech at the event, Nancy urged all parties to move beyond simply employing PwD towards developing their talents and careers.

She said the private sector had a significant role to play given the abundance of employment opportunities available, and urged employers to assess the potential and contributions that PwD could offer.

“At the same time, I urge organisations to involve the PwD community itself in planning an inclusive work environment and employment system. The principle is simple: we should not assume what PwD need without listening to their own experiences.

“In KPWKM's accessibility agenda, the PwD community is also emphasised as users and partners who must be involved in evaluating the solutions developed, because the true measure of inclusivity is the experience of those who use the system,” she said. — Bernama
