Pramono Anung respects Greenpeace protest, urges public order

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo respected Greenpeace Indonesia's protest after activists unfurled two giant banners criticizing climate policy and rising living costs at the welcome monument in the central Jakarta on Tuesday.

"Jakarta, like Indonesia, is a democracy. We respect and appreciate such actions, but they must not disrupt public order," Pramono told reporters here Tuesday.

He hoped the banners had already been taken down because they could disrupt public order in Jakarta.

"I hear they may take them down soon. We must not allow public order to be disrupted," he said.

Police and firefighters removed the Greenpeace banners at about 8 a.m. local time, according to reports.

The protest coincided with the second anniversary of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka taking office.

Students and civil society groups were also scheduled to demonstrate on Tuesday at the Proclamation Monument and Tugu Tani, Central Jakarta.

Organizers from the University of Indonesia (UI), national student executive boards, and "Sadar" Committee (Save People's Sovereignty) expected 500 people at Tugu Tani to protest environmental issues, corruption, limits on free speech and high public-service costs.
