Indonesia advances transport emissions cuts through UK partnership

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has developed a roadmap to accelerate transportation decarbonization, outlining planned measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all transport subsectors through a partnership with the United Kingdom.
The roadmap was developed as part of the Transportation Ministry's participation in the United Kingdom Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) program, according to a statement received here on Sunday.
"Our ministry is committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by promoting the use of mass public transportation, shifting passenger and freight transport to railways, and modernizing vessels and aircraft technology," the Transportation Ministry Secretary-General Arif Toha stated.
He noted the government developed the roadmap in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia and other consortium partners, based on a greenhouse gas emissions inventory and analyses of individual transportation subsectors.

The roadmap is expected to serve as a reference for all units within the ministry in formulating policies, programs, and mitigation action plans, he added.
Toha further noted the policy direction aims to encourage a shift from private vehicles to mass public transportation, such as buses and trains, supported by measures to improve road traffic management and expand railway electrification.
On sea transport, he underscored the ministry's commitment in reducing emissions through vessel modernization and improved operational efficiency in the shipping sector.
He added emission-reduction measures in air transport include technology upgrades, enhanced flight efficiency, and the use of sustainable aviation fuel.
"The implementation will definitely require commitment, cross-subsector coordination, and continued monitoring and evaluation to achieve the targets that have been set," Toha said.

He noted Indonesia expects the roadmap to strengthen the transportation sector's contribution to achieve the national net-zero emissions target by 2060 through emissions inventories and robust monitoring, reporting, and verification systems.
"The Transportation Decarbonization Roadmap Document strengthens policies and mitigation actions within the Transportation Ministry and makes tangible contributions to achieving national greenhouse gas emission reduction targets," he said.
In addition to producing the roadmap, he added, the partnership has also resulted in the development of guidelines for calculating emissions.
He said efforts are currently underway to develop supporting tools and equipment to strengthen decarbonization planning and implementation.
