Edmonton Oilers’ Mattias Ekholm Out A Minimum of One Week After Alarming Third-Period Exit

The Edmonton Oilers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 6-5 in a shootout Thursday, but the postgame mood inside Rogers Place was complicated. Early in the third period, Hurricanes forward William Carrier hit Ekholm, who went down hard with his head appearing to strike the ice. He was slow to get up, unsteady on his skates, and needed help getting to the dressing room. He did not return. Coach Mike Babcock confirmed afterwards that Ekholm will miss at least one week. For a team that has started the season well at 8-1-1, the injury lands at an uncomfortable time on the depth chart.

Ekholm's Sudden Exit and What Followed

The team has not announced a diagnosis, though the scene raised immediate concerns about a concussion. Babcock said little beyond the one-week timeline and suggested it was another opportunity for a defenseman to step up. Shakir Mukhamadullin is believed to be that player.

After the game, there were some encouraging signs. Ekholm was not taken to a hospital and never left the building. When teammates came off the ice, he was waiting at ice level in the locker room, exchanging high-fives. TSN's Ryan Rishaug said Ekholm looked just fine, though he stopped short of minimising the situation.

The belief around the team initially was that this was a concussion protocol situation and the Oilers chose to be cautious, as any player flagged by league spotters would have been pulled from the game for at least 15 minutes regardless. However, following further medical evaluation on Friday, head coach Mike Babcock provided a definitive update and officially confirmed that Ekholm has been diagnosed with a concussion.

Who Fills In and What Edmonton Loses

The confirmed absence covers Saturday against Toronto, Monday against Detroit, and Wednesday's Battle of Alberta against Calgary. Ekholm normally runs alongside Evan Bouchard on the top pair. With him out, rather than sliding Ryan Shea into that spot, the Oilers have promoted Shakir Mukhamadullin directly from the press box to skate on the top pairing with Bouchard. It is a massive opportunity for Mukhamadullin, who has not regularly handled top-pairing responsibilities against opposing first lines.

Ekholm's role in Edmonton's structure is specific. He takes on the difficult matchups that let the forwards play with more freedom in the offensive zone. He is a veteran who logs heavy minutes and handles tough assignments, and his absence will be felt on a blue line already stretched thin with other injuries this season. Losing him even short-term forces the coaching staff to rethink who absorbs those minutes and against whom.

The Oilers are navigating the league's concussion protocol, and the timeline could shift depending on how Ekholm progresses through the recovery steps. One week to ten days is what the team is saying publicly right now. Whether that holds depends entirely on him receiving full medical clearance, not just the calendar.
