Stranger Things’ Gaten Matarazzo surprises London crowds with Rent singalong

Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo and his fellow cast members from the musical Rent have surprised London crowds with a rendition of the show’s hit song ahead of opening night.

Matarazzo, 24, best known for starring in the Netflix sci-fi series as Dustin Henderson, will make his West End debut on Saturday night as Mark Cohen, the narrator and struggling filmmaker in the award-winning rock musical.

Created by Jonathan Larson, Rent follows a group of young artists as they navigate life in New York City amid the HIV/Aids epidemic.

Ahead of opening night at the Tom Stoppard Theatre, the cast performed the musical’s hit song, Seasons of Love, to London crowds eagerly waiting to bag a ticket for tonight’s show.

To mark the musical’s 30th anniversary, 100 stall tickets were available to purchase on Saturday for £20 for the show’s first preview.

The deal mirrors the show’s world premiere on Broadway nearly three decades ago, which offered a day seat ticketing initiative offering front row seats on a first come, first served basis for 20 dollars.

Following opening night, preview performances up until October 7 will offer front row tickets for £30 when purchased on the day of the show at the box office.

A digital lottery for day seats will be launched for future performances from Friday October 9.

The revival opened on Saturday and will run until March 27.

Matarazzo rose to fame starring alongside Millie Bobby Brown, Sadie Sink and Finn Wolfhard in the Duffer Brothers series Stranger Things.

The show, which also starred Joe Kerry, Caleb McLaughlin and Noah Schnapp launched in 2016 and came to an end in January with its fifth and final season.
