Samartex edge Gold Stars to strengthen title credentials in Western derby
FC Samartex 1996 strengthened their Ghana Premier League title credentials with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bibiani Gold Stars in the Western derby.
Christian Agyenim Boateng scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 25th minute to hand the Timber Giants their fourth win of the campaign.
The victory represents another important result for Samartex, who have moved to second place in the league standings, level on points with leaders Medeama SC.
Playing in front of their home supporters, Samartex approached the regional contest with determination, knowing the importance of securing maximum points against their Western Region rivals.
The breakthrough arrived in the 25th minute when Agyenim Boateng stepped up to convert a penalty, giving the hosts a valuable lead.
Gold Stars, who have established themselves as a competitive force in the Ghanaian top flight, were unable to find a response as Samartex protected their advantage.
The Timber Giants showed resilience to see out the contest and secure all three points in a derby that carried significant implications for the league standings.
The result takes Samartex's tally to four victories this season and keeps them firmly in the title conversation, with the club now breathing down the necks of league leaders Medeama.
For Gold Stars, the defeat represents a missed opportunity to collect points in a difficult away fixture.
With the title race beginning to take shape, Samartex will be encouraged by their consistency and ability to grind out results in closely contested matches.
Full-time: Samartex 1-0 Gold Stars.
