Prabowo praises Rahmat Erwin after Asian Games gold

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto praised weightlifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah after he won Indonesia's second gold medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a world-record total of 366 kilograms.

"Indonesia has once again received joyful news from one of its own. Indonesian weightlifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah successfully won a gold medal while breaking world and ASEAN records at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games," he wrote on Instagram, as cited in Jakarta on Sunday.

Prabowo said he had personally congratulated Rahmat during a video call, expressing appreciation for the athlete's efforts and hard work.

"I have spoken personally with Rahmat Erwin via video call. I extended my appreciation for his efforts and hard work," he said.

The president also thanked Rahmat for his achievement and encouraged him to continue excelling in international competitions and bringing pride to Indonesia.

Rahmat moved Indonesia closer to its target of four gold medals after winning the men's 75-kilogram weightlifting event at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Center on Saturday.

He recorded a total lift of 366 kilograms, comprising 160 kilograms in the snatch and 206 kilograms in the clean and jerk, setting a world record.

The victory followed a close contest with Thailand's Weeraphon Wichuma, who finished one kilogram behind Rahmat with a total of 365 kilograms.

Both lifters traded record-breaking lifts before Rahmat secured the gold with a successful 206-kilogram clean and jerk, giving him a one-kilogram advantage over Wichuma.

His victory brought Indonesia's gold medal tally to two, following the men's badminton team's gold medal.
