Fallout 5 isn't only inevitable; it's been officially announced. As the Xbox brand attempts to reinvent itself this year, it's refocusing on its biggest franchises, and that involves moving Halo over to Activision and moving forward with multiple projects from Bethesda, including Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls 6.

Both games have a long road ahead, but we do know a bit about them so far thanks to recent announcements. Over on Reddit, fans are discussing the latest update on Fallout 5, and what it might mean for the franchise going forward. While Fallout 76 runs alongside any given Fallout release, long-time players are eagerly awaiting the next major iteration.

With the news that Fallout 5 is finally in preproduction, fans are hoping for more innovation beyondmap size and enhanced fidelity. After all, we have progressed so far in visuals and scope that many open-world games have over 100 hours of things to do. But there's a give-and-take with that "go bigger" mentality. The world needs to be interesting, because if it's not, players won't even make it to the 20-hour mark.

That said, fans want more from Bethesda than a standard Fallout experience. As one fan notes: "Better, more satisfying combat physics. I hate that the bodies just ragdoll after you kill them." It's a small ask, but it makes sense, especially since Bethesda's engines tend to get long in the tooth.

Others want even bigger, loftier goals: "My priorities would be: bigger map; more wilderness (like around Nuka World, or the north-west of the Commonwealth in Fo4); less of the same (all the raider and super mutant camps spammed around got massively tedious and impeded exploration); more damn settlements with character and NPCs (Diamond City, Far Harbour, Acadia); less repetitive companion NPC dialogue; fewer quests but with longer questlines instead of loads of piddy, quirky / "retrieve ma Grandpa's sword" quests."

Another user has my favorite suggestion yet: "I hope they will give some love to the companion system. I would love for them to deepen the mechanics surrounding it. They could hopefully add some more and deeper RPG elements." With a deeper companion system, we could see some more interesting stories unfold as you slowly learn more about them in a more organic way.

Elder Scrolls 6 is scheduled to release before Fallout 5

Other fans are thinking more outside of the box: "We need a streamer-friendly setting. I love streaming, and I love Fallout. But the copyrighted music makes it impossible for me to stream it. Maybe we can turn off copyrighted music in settings or switch to alternate music in-game that isn’t copyrighted."

Whatever happens with Fallout 5, it's likely a way out. We can speculate in the meantime, and the TV show might offer glimpses into where the series could go next, as it preps to deliver its third season. Before then, we also have the remakes of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas to look forward to, plus a little game called The Elder Scrolls 6.
