East Java's BPBD remaps evacuation routes after Bromo's eruption

Probolinggo, E Java (ANTARA) - Probolinggo's Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) in East Java is remapping evacuation routes and shelters after Mount Bromo erupted on Thursday, preparing for a possible renewed eruption.
“We are working with the military and police to remap evacuation routes and shelters as a precaution in case Bromo erupts again,” the agency's head, Oemar Sjarif, here Friday.
Bromo erupted at 5:11 p.m. Thursday, sending an ash column 500 meters above its 2,329-meter summit, or 2,829 meters above sea level. Its previous recorded eruption was July 19, 2019, although no plume was seen.
The agency is coordinating with the Bromo Volcano Observatory and Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park officials to monitor volcanic activity, Oemar said.
CCTV footage showed Bromo's activity remained stable Friday morning, with its alert status at Level II, or Alert, though officials continued monitoring the volcano.
“The alert status has not changed. Residents and tourists are prohibited from entering areas within 1 kilometer of Bromo's active crater,” he said.
Thursday's seismic record showed one eruption (23 mm, 46 seconds), four low-frequency quakes (1 mm, 10-11 seconds), six hybrid quakes (1 mm, 5-10 seconds; S-P not observed) and continuous tremor (0.5-1 mm, mostly 0.5).
Visibility ranged from clear to foggy. White and gray crater emissions, ranging from thin to thick, rose 50-500 meters above the summit. Skies were clear to cloudy, with light westerly and northwesterly winds.
Oemar said the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) maintained Bromo's Level II alert and advised residents, visitors and hikers to stay one kilometer from the active crater.
Residents, vendors, tourists, hikers and tourism operators should also watch for sudden phreatic eruptions, which may occur without clear preceding volcanic signs, he said.
