Prabowo informed of illegal wiretapping, minister says

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was informed by National Police Chief Suyudi Ario Seto that he was among those allegedly targeted in an illegal wiretapping operation, Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said.
"Of course, the president knows because the national police chief reported it to him," Yusril told a news conference at his office in Jakarta on Tuesday evening.
Yusril said the report was made because alleged wiretapping of the president and several ministers was a serious matter involving national interests.
He said the case could not be treated lightly, particularly because investigators had yet to establish why the president and other state officials were allegedly targeted.
"Imagine the president being intercepted and wiretapped, and ministers being wiretapped. We do not even know why this was done. This is not a simple matter; it is a serious issue for a country," Yusril said.
Earlier, the National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) named three officers, identified by their initials LSP, ASN and EH, as suspects in alleged unlawful interception, electronic data deletion and unauthorized access.
Bareskrim Chief Commissioner General Asep Safrudin said the three suspects allegedly wiretapped the president, ministers, state officials, political figures and media representatives from 2025.
Speaking at a news conference at National Police headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday, Asep said the suspects allegedly intercepted their targets' telephone numbers without authorization. The operation reportedly continued into 2026.
"The suspects allegedly conducted illegal wiretapping of telephone numbers belonging to the Indonesian president, state officials, political figures, media representatives, civic organization leaders, nongovernmental organizations and businesspeople," Asep said.
The suspects allegedly ordered the interception without investigators' formal requests or accompanying police reports, he added.
The wiretapping was unrelated to law enforcement activities. The suspects also allegedly deleted system logs in October 2026 to erase records of the interceptions.
The three suspects face charges under Article 258 and Article 332(1) and/or (2) of Law No. 1/2023 on the Criminal Code, as well as Article 32(1) of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law.
The suspects are being held at the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency's detention facility in Jakarta. A fourth individual, identified as SU, is being questioned as a witness.
