BATU PAHAT: The driver of a tar-laden lorry involved in a crash that killed a married couple when the vehicle overturned onto their multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) near Parit Yaani on Sunday has been remanded for four days.

The remand order against the 30-year-old man was issued by magistrate Aimi Nawwar Mohamad Othman today to allow police to complete their investigation.

The suspect, who was also injured in the crash, was discharged from Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital yesterday. He arrived at the court at 8.15am today for the remand proceedings.

The accident occurred around 12.30pm when the lorry is believed to have skidded after one of its tyres burst before landing on the MPV carrying a family of four.

Mohd Hardi Mohd Husin, 46, and his wife, Tengku Syafirana Tengku Abdullah, 44, suffered severe head and body injuries, as well as burns, and died at the scene.

Their children, Hasya Fahira Zulkifli, 11, and Muhammad Adam, 8, were also injured and suffered burns. They received treatment at the same hospital.

Investigations found that the family was travelling home to Parit Maimon, Parit Sulong, after buying groceries at a supermarket in Yong Peng.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
