Warning! Spoilers ahead for Tracker season 4, episode 2, "Switchback."As Tracker continues season 4, CBS makes its main Colter Shaw story replacement official. Justin Hartley is back on Sunday nights as network TV's favorite lone-wolf, and this time, he has returned to the series' procedural roots. A vital part of CBS's fall 2026 lineup, Tracker season 4 is somewhat a new era for the project, as it marks a couple of firsts for the project. Despite the risks brought by these new challenges, having been on the air for three seasons makes it the perfect time to do an overhaul.
Tracker season 3 was a transformational period for the fan-favorite show. Hartley's project maintained its stronghold of the top spot when it came to network ratings during the majority of the 2025-2026 TV cycle until Luke Grimes' Marshals of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone fame premiered late in the year. Despite sliding to the number 2 spot, Tracker has continued to be very popular, with season 4 even scoring a historic tax break that allowed it to move production from Canada to California. In terms of narrative, the death of Ashton Shaw, which was the core plot of the offering since it started, has also been effectively solved. This left CBS needing to fill that story void, which it now officially has.
Mel's Mother's Murder Is The Overarching Family Mystery In Tracker Season 4
While Colter finds a mother and daughter lost in a hiking trip, Mel's personal story gets some major updates back in the office in Tracker season 4, episode 2. When Cassady McClincy Zhang was introduced as Reenie's new assistant in season 3, she came with her own narrative, which involved the murder of her mother. Because the show is mostly about Colter, the matter hasn't been brought up again in a more concrete way until "Switchback." In the episode, Mel personally asks Reenie if she could poke around about a guy named Eric Jefferies — a former military officer who may have worked with her mom before she was killed. Reenie is more than happy to help, but she is immediately shrouded with worries after learning that the mysterious man may not exactly be a good development for the Day family case.
There has always been the idea that the murder of Mel's mother would play a part in Tracker, but "Switchback" formalizes it as an overarching narrative in the series. With the Shaws' own parental death mystery now resolved, this ongoing case is the perfect replacement for that void, especially since CBS is taking its time laying out the new overarching plot for Colter. While the Tracker season 3 finale laid the foundation for a new arc, with McIntyre's secret file, Russell's continued absence is keeping that storyline in limbo for now. In any case, Mel's plot better lines up as a replacement for the Shaw family mystery as they both deal with the suspicious death of a parent.
Why The Days' Family Mystery Can Be Better Than The Shaws' In Tracker
It's currently uncertain if solving her mother's case was part of Mel's plan when she applied to join Reenie's budding company. When she was first introduced in Tracker, there was some skepticism about her true intentions, considering her increased interest in Colter. Now, it's possible that she just wanted to get close to him for the sake of her family's cold case. In terms of prominence, it's curious how Tracker will develop the Days' overarching plot. Unlike the Shaws, Mel is more of a supporting character, meaning there's not much urgency to solve it — at least right now.
What makes this new plot better than its predecessor is that it is built to get everyone involved. Colter's family drama was mostly contained to its family members, with him and Russell the only ones who really actively tried to solve it. Since Mel is in the office with Reenie and Randy, and her mom's story is out in the open, it makes it easier for both of them to be invested in this case. Once Colter finds out about the matter, it would be hard to imagine that he won't offer to chip in. This will help Tracker better establish its ensemble, which can be helpful in terms of its sustainability.
