'Best job in football': Sarina Wiegman signs new England contract extension

Wiegman had already extended her Lionesses deal to include next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, but has now agreed to stay on for one further tournament cycle.

“I am so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football,” said Wiegman.

“Working for a world-class organisation like the FA, and alongside so many people dedicated to winning England teams and the growth of our game, excites me every day.

“Of course, anyone who knows me will understand that my main concern right now is absolutely the World Cup, and helping this squad realise their potential in the years to come.

“We have an important job to do to confirm our place in Brazil, and hopefully we can do that and give the country another special summer to remember next year.”

The FA’s chief football officer Dan Ashworth said: “We have been aware for a long time now that this is a golden age for women’s football in this country, and Sarina has played a significant part.

“In Sarina, we have an elite coach who has won consistently while operating at the highest tactical level, embracing innovation and never standing still. Her record is remarkable.

“While Sarina is fuelled by a determination to keep on winning and to support the growth of the game, her humility also shines through. It is never about her but always about a desire to maximise the potential within players to be the best they can be.”
