BNPB bolsters efforts to fight 600-hectare national park fire

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is stepping up efforts to contain forest and land fires covering about 600 hectares in Way Kambas National Park, Lampung, amid limited water supplies.

"The fire affected the Cabang Resort area of the Bungur section, with an estimated 600 hectares of land affected," Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data and Communications Center, Berton S.P. Panjaitan, said here on Friday.

BNPB said limited water supplies had hampered firefighting operations in Way Kambas National Park.

Panjaitan said difficult terrain, limited water supplies, and considerable distance between fire spots and water sources posed major challenges to firefighting operations.

To overcome the obstacles, joint teams from the Way Kambas National Park Office, regional disaster agency, military, police, and volunteers are conducting manual firefighting using hand tools and water jet shooters.

The response has been strengthened by deploying portable pumps and creating firebreaks to stop the fire from spreading further.

BNPB continues coordinating with conservation-area managers to protect wildlife habitats from the threat of wider fire spread.

The blaze has been burning since Tuesday (September 22).
