Forget House Of The Dragon, HBO's Biggest Show Of The Year Officially Premieres In 2 Months

HBO has saved its biggest release of 2026 for last. Of course, that's a pretty significant statement, since this has been an excellent year for the platform. Ever since Game of Thrones, HBO has been firmly at the top of the streaming landscape. The franchise's momentum has hardly waned, too, and 2026 has been a particularly strong year in this regard. All in one year, we got the premiere of the prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as well as the third season of Game of Thrones' first spinoff, House of the Dragon.

Both House of the Dragon season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms performed spectacularly in terms of viewership, so HBO could really leave 2026 feeling pretty strong about its existing fantasy offerings. That's not quite how this is going to go, however, since HBO Max's TV adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will premiere on December 25, 2026.

HBO announced its TV remake of the Harry Potter series a couple of years ago, and the project pretty much immediately attracted a lot of attention—some good, some bad. This is a book series that has already been adapted to the screen, and the Harry Potter movies are still massively popular and beloved, so there have been some raised eyebrows. Still, HBO has promised a book-faithful adaptation, which is something Warner Bros.' films really couldn't boast of. On the other hand, controversies around J.K. Rowling have reflected poorly on the adaptation as well.

All of this together means that we can't really say just yet whether HBO's Harry Potter series will be good or well received. However, it also means that, one way or the other, this TV show is bound to attract an absolutely massive audience when it premieres in two months. More likely than not, Harry Potter will be HBO's biggest series of the year.

Signs Point To A Massive Viewership For HBO's Harry Potter

The fact that HBO's Harry Potter has been such a hot topic over the last couple of years is a strong hint that it will be the platform's biggest release of 2026. Sure, much of this talk has been heavy debate, but that only means the curiosity factor is that much higher. The public is very interested to see how this project is going to play out. House of the Dragon drew a lot of interest this year, absolutely, but scrutiny on this project hasn't been at that same level of intensity. The proof is right there in the trailer for Harry Potter.

The teaser for HBO's Harry Potter TV series broke the record for the platform's most viewed trailer of all time, dethroning The Last of Us season 2. Regardless of how people felt about the trailer, the curiosity factor was enough to get them watching. The same will be true to some extent for that premiere. Harry Potter is a massively popular franchise that has remained consistently profitable for decades. Between the solid fanbase that will be there rain or shine, those who want to see what this show is all about, and the group that wants to hate it, viewership is guaranteed.

The fact that Harry Potter premieres on Christmas Day is another strong indicator that HBO expects this to be its biggest release of the year. December 25 isn't just a standard release date. Anything that gets this particular moment to shine is meant to be an event, not just a TV show. HBO is almost certainly trying to establish a certain tone here. A Christmas premiere adds a little extra touch of magic.

Of course, it's important to acknowledge that none of this means that HBO's Harry Potter will be well received. We can't possibly know how critics and general audiences will react until the big day finally arrives. What seems certain, however, is that in HBO's eyes, this one is for all the Gobstones.
