Defense industry urged to strengthen military, economy: Jauhari

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Defense Minister Yusuf Jauhari said the government encourages the domestic defense industry to strengthen the Indonesian Military (TNI) while also driving the economy.

"We are encouraging the entire defense industry to contribute to strengthening our TNI, and the hope is that it is not only the TNI's strength, but also how the economy moves. Likewise with technology transfer and technology use," Jauhari said at the State Palace here on Thursday (October 15).

Therefore, he said, the government is preparing cooperation schemes so that it and industry can collaborate together for both national defense and non-defense interests.

When asked about the self-reliance of primary weapons systems and the defense industry, especially amid global geopolitical dynamics, the deputy minister explained that the government is trying to anticipate possible future turbulence, one way being diversifying the systems.

"I think diversification is an option for us now because that way we are also trying to be self-reliant and not depend on a single country. Yes, complexity in logistics management does exist," he said.

He added that the government also encourages the defense industry to participate in supporting this so that the strength continues to materialize, not only as military strength but as a strength that supports the whole continuity of the nation.

Jauhari, who was previously a three-star vice marshal, was promoted one rank to marshal with four-star insignia when he was sworn in as Deputy Defense Minister by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (October 15).

Jauhari was inaugurated as Deputy Defense Minister for Logistics, Defense Industry, and Technology alongside General Richard Tampubolon, who also received a promotion from three-star to four-star rank, as Deputy Defense Minister for Strategy, Doctrine, and Power Development.
