MANILA, Philippines — Whether or not the operating hours of the Manila North Cemetery during Undas—or the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day—will be extended will have to be evaluated by the local government of Manila.

Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso gave this view on Friday (October 30).

As of now, Manila North Cemetery will only be open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. during annual holidays, with no extensions so far announced, despite a large influx of visitors expected.

“If it needs to be extended, then so be it. But we’ll play it by ear. We’ll see,” said Domagoso.

“We have set the tasks and times that we must perform. But if necessary, we we will adjust as a government, then so be it, to accommodate as many as we can,” he added.

According to Domagoso, such adjustments may be necessary due to the rising population of Manila.

“Because our population, or our potential clientele, is increasing every year, so the number of people buried here is really increasing,” the mayor noted.

As of 1 p.m. of Friday Oct. 30, around 5,900 have already visited Manila North Cemetery.

This is despite Friday being a work day and still two days before Nov. 1, the day when the main observance of Undas is traditionally held.
