Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem, Rappa: Yankee Ninpū Chō Manga Artist Eiji Hashimoto Confirms Full Hearing Loss in Right Ear
Manga artist Eiji Hashimoto confirmed on his pixiv Fanbox page on September 15 that he has now fully lost hearing in his right ear. Hashimoto previously revealed in May that he was diagnosed with sudden sensorineural hearing loss, or sudden deafness, in April due to overwork. Hashimoto stated in May that he lost his hearing in his right ear temporarily, which resulted in dizziness, vomiting, and other issues.
Hashimoto stated in his latest announcement that he started treatment within a week of the onset, trying every possible hospital and private treatments in hopes of getting back at least 50% of his hearing, but to no avail. Hashimoto stated that the most dangerous part in losing his hearing is the ability to correctly perceive space and distance, which has affected his daily life, but added that he has gotten used to it and can handle it now.
Hashimoto stated that it took about two months of rehabilitation to recover from the issues that come with hearing loss, and he has gotten to a point where he can stand up normally, climb stairs, walk in a straight line and without getting dizzy, and live a normal life without any problems. He added that he can also now sit at his desk for long periods of time and use his computer without any problems. But he assured that he makes sure to do his morning cardio exercises and maintain a regular sleep schedule and eating habits.
Hashimoto emphasized that since his sudden hearing loss was due to stress and overwork, he needs to work without placing excessive strain on his mind and body. With that, he plans to resume activities while taking various precautions.
Hashimoto previously announced in May that his Rappa: Yankee Ninpū Chō manga (image right) would go on a two-week hiatus, and the publishing schedule for the series would temporarily switch to a new chapter release every three weeks. The manga returned from its hiatus and published new chapters for two consecutive weeks on June 11 and June 18, before going back on hiatus on June 25.
Hashimoto launched the series in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine in September 2024. Akita Shoten shipped the eighth compiled book volume on June 8.
Hashimoto and Shinya Umemura released a special one-shot for their Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem (Chiruran: Shinsengumi Chinkon-ka) manga to commemorate the debut of the manga's live-action adaptation in March. Hashimoto first teased the one-shot last December.
Umemura provided the story, and Hashimoto illustrated the manga. The duo launched the series in the inaugural issue of Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Comic Zenon magazine in 2010. The manga began its final arc with the 32nd volume in January 2022, and ended in April 2023.
The manga inspired a stage play adaptation that ran in April 2017.
Umemura and Hashimoto launched a comedy spinoff manga titled Chiruran Nibun no Ichi in Monthly Comic Zenon in May 2016. The spinoff manga received an anime series of shorts that premiered in January 2017. Crunchyroll streamed the series under the title Chiruran 1/2 as it aired.
