BNPB prioritizes Central Kalimantan, South Sumatra for fire mitigation

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Central Kalimantan and South Sumatra have been prioritized by the government for forest and land fire mitigation following a sharp increase in hotspots and the area of land being handled in both provinces.

Acting Head of the Data, Information, and Disaster Center of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Berton Panjaitan, said on Wednesday that six of the 10 provinces being monitored nationally were of particular concern, with 864 hotspots detected and a total of 1,615 hectares of land under mitigation.

“In Central Kalimantan, the number of hotspots increased by 50 percent to 425 compared with yesterday, while the area of land under mitigation reached 664 hectares, also showing an increase,” Panjaitan said.

He added that a similar situation had been observed in South Sumatra, where the number of hotspots surged by 186 percent to 60, while the area of land under mitigation reached 105 hectares, up 66 percent from the previous day.

Jambi also recorded an increase in hotspots and the area of land affected by fires, with 150 hotspots detected, a 134 percent rise, and 403 hectares of land under mitigation.

In response to the sharp upward trend in these priority areas, the agency urged local governments to strengthen preparedness and optimize firefighting resources.

Panjaitan said BNPB continued to mobilize aerial resources for firefighting, patrols, and weather modification operations to help prevent forest and land fires from spreading amid current climate conditions.

“We urge local governments to pay particular attention, especially to the increase in hotspots and the area of land being handled. We will do everything within our capacity to manage the situation,” he said.
