Fallout 3 Remake Gameplay Looks Seriously Next-Gen

Translate

James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

The Fallout franchise is in a weird spot right now, in as far as we know there's a lot of exciting projects on the way, but we simultaneously don't know when exactly we're going to be able to experience any of them. The big one was obviously the news that Fallout 5 is in production, but given that The Elder Scrolls VI is the priority for the time being, don't expect to see anything of that any time soon.

Outside of that, we also know that remakes of both Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3 are in production. Happily, those should be a lot less difficult to achieve than the next game in the series, so we should be playing at least one of those over the next year or two. While we wait, fans have taken matters into their own hands, somewhat, and there's a remake that really shows just how much potential the return of those classic titles has.

As first reported by DSO Gaming, work in progress project A Tale of Two Wastelands has been brought forward yet again, with the channel YouTube Viewer uploading footage of the mod running with RTX Remix, and it could be the best way to play while we wait for the official remakes. If you have heard of it before, A Tale of Two Wastelands essentially combines both Fallout 3 and New Vegas into one single playthrough.

It does this by porting Fallout 3's data and world spaces into the Fallout: New Vegas engine, where a single continuous character can enjoy a playthrough across both the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave via a train, with a raised level cap of 60. From a mechanical perspective it features everything you expect from the latest New Vegas, including crafting, the companion wheel, and aim down sights.

This latest YouTube showcases what all of that would be like with considerably upgraded graphics from anything we have seen to date, if you can get over the uncanny nature offered by RTX Remix. The footage also makes use of ray reconstruction and neural rendering, and we have everything from path-traced lighting to improved textures in play.

That means the shadows also look a lot better, and fans were keen to share just how excited they would be to play versions of the games that look that modern. "Yea, the single biggest thing Fallout 3 and NV are missing that would be an immediate overall improvement without changing anything else, would be shadows. Even basic shadows," one comment read.

While another added, "Incredible work. I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say that we would love to get a setup guide for this."

"This looks so good! The only critique are some of the interiors, especially the subway, look too bright," a third said.

The YouTuber has yet to make it publically available in one convenient package, with all the settings that players need, but given how many comments have asked already, don't be surprised to see that crop up in the near-future.

Other than that, we just have to sit tight and wait to hear more from Bethesda themselves about what their release plans are for the new games. At least we definitely have the third season of the Prime Video adaptation of Fallout to enjoy in the meantime, when that drops for fans next year.
