Lampung develops local robusta clones to revive aging trees

Bandarlampung (ANTARA) - Lampung Province is developing high-performing local robusta coffee clones developed by farmers to rejuvenate aging plantations and diversify coffee production.

"Lampung, particularly West Lampung, has many innovative farmers who have developed robusta clones. We value and support their work," said Lampung Plantation Agency Head Desti Arisandi in Bandar Lampung on Friday.

To support farmers' innovations, the agency is cultivating these superior local robusta clones at the Hanakau Plantation Nursery in West Lampung.

"At Hanakau, we manage 10 hectares of collection and production plots. We graft existing coffee trees using planting material from superior clones developed by local farmers," she said.

She said the development was necessary because six hectares of the nursery's 10-hectare coffee plantation consist of 15- to 20-year-old trees that have become less productive.

"These older trees are being grafted with superior local clones to restore their productivity," she said.

Some coffee trees at Hanakau have already been grafted with the superior local clones and have returned to productive condition, she added.

"Some grafted trees have begun bearing fruit after only two years. The collection of superior local clones also helps diversify Lampung's robusta coffee production," she said.

She emphasized that the initiative also recognizes and rewards farmers for their efforts to develop superior local robusta coffee clones.

"We hope these clones can eventually be officially released as recognized varieties," she said.

Lampung produced 127,578 tons of robusta coffee in 2025, up from 120,377 tons in 2024.

The province had 152,527 hectares of robusta coffee plantations in 2025.

Of that total, 7,921 hectares comprised immature plants, 137,792 hectares were productive plantations, and 6,814 hectares consisted of damaged or aging plants.
