Scrubs season 2 release date, cast and latest news

The Scrubs revival earlier this year proved a great success, with a second season of the series getting a green light just days after the final episode of the first season (or 10th season if you count the original seasons that went before) was broadcast.

The new-old show featured the return of fan favourites JD (Zach Braff), Elliot (Sarah Chalke) and Turk (Donald Faison), who became mentors to a batch of new interns getting to grips with the demanding realities of a career in medicine at Sacred Heart.

JD and his pals were joined by some familiar faces, including John C McGinley as Dr Cox and Judy Reyes as Nurse Carla, while Neil Flynn popped up briefly as the Janitor.

They are all back for season 2, which is coming very soon. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming episodes.

The second season of the Scrubs revival will air in the UK on Thursday 1 October 2026 on Disney+, with a two-episode premiere.

News of the show's second season came in April, shortly after the finale of season 1 (or 10, depending on how you count it), after a strong critical and commercial reception to JD and Turk's long-awaited new era.

Which cast members are back for Scrubs season 2?

Zach Braff (JD), Sarah Chalke (Elliott) and Donald Faison (Turk) are all returning for Scrubs season 2, with the show's bosses teasing further reprisals in the next batch of episodes.

Speaking to Deadline in April, executive producer Aseem Batra revealed it was "absolutely" still the plan to bring actor Ken Jenkins out of his apparent retirement for another stint as fearsome Dr Bob Kelso.

"We will be rolling out characters that we didn’t get to see last season for sure," she explained. "So we have plans for all of that, we're very excited to see folks that we miss from the old Scrubs."

Top of her list were Jenkins, Johnny Kastl (Dr Doug Murphy) and Scott Foley (Elliot's ex, Sean Kelly), who makes a brief appearance in the season 2 trailer. Batra also hinted at an expanded role for Neil Flynn (as the taunting unnamed Janitor).

On those highly demanded returnees, Scrubs star Braff added (via TV Line): "I'll say to the fans who miss Neil that we get it — we only had nine episodes and we had so much to do... We get it, and we're working on it.

"If and when we're lucky enough to get a full order, our plan is to set up situations where Neil can recur and Johnny can be there a whole lot more. I just want all the fans to know that we're on the same page with you."

In another Deadline report, it was confirmed that Rachel Bilson (of The OC and Hart of Dixie fame) would be reprising her role as Charlie, a potential love interest for JD, in a recurring season 2 arc.

We'd also expect more from Judy Reyes (Carla), Christa Miller (Jordan) and John C McGinley (Dr Cox), who is poised to become JD's patient in the next chapter as he grapples with a rare, life-changing health condition.

McGinley is hopeful that he'll be more prominent moving forward. "I think that Cox will come back a lot more in season 2," he said (via Deadline). "There's been a big outcry, that's very flattering."

What will happen in Scrubs season 2?

Scrubs season 2 plot details have been teased in a new trailer and it looks likely that the show will focus on JD and Elliott's post-divorce love lives, plus the imminent health battle of their former mentor Dr Cox.

Although fans were initially surprised to learn that JD and Elliott had split, the storyline ultimately received a positive reception from viewers – even if some remain hopeful that the characters can rekindle their flame.

The introduction of new love interest Charlie, played by Rachel Bilson (as discussed above), suggests it might be a while yet until any such reconciliation comes about – if indeed it ever does.

On that storyline, Braff told TV Line: "Everyone who's had this experience knows you can still go, 'This isn't right, we aren't compatible,' but it still hurts your heart when you see them flirting with someone. And that's going to be tricky for them.

"Their friendship is going to continue to evolve, because they both really respect each other as doctors and as parents. We didn't get [to tell stories about] the kids just because we didn't have the bandwidth [with nine episodes], but there will be more of that."

He teased: "Some couples get divorced and they hate each other, and then some couples get divorced and, because they're co-parents, learn how to be good friends. That's the direction we're going to head with it."

Meanwhile, fans are hopeful for a larger role for John C McGinley's Dr Cox, as he becomes a patient of his former mentee JD, having been diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition.

McGinley views that development as "structurally" important for the show.

"The hero needs consequences and a threat and jeopardy, and without Ken Jenkins [who played Kelso] and not enough of the Janitor, it falls on [Cox]," he explained, in an interview with Deadline.

"There has to be jeopardy, and that jeopardy is Cox, however Billy [Lawrence, creator] writes it. I think Cox will be more thickly woven into the tapestry of season 2, [but] I'm completely speculating."
