Paul Heyman has no interest in getting married, and he doesn't hide why. The WWE Hall of Famer said on In Depth With Graham Bensinger that he sees marriage as a legal tie that can turn staying together into a duty instead of a decision. Asked why he wouldn't marry, his answer was short: “No… because it's a trap.” He isn't against long-term commitment or monogamy, though. What he rejects is the legal side of it, and he says even signing a prenuptial agreement doesn't solve the problem for him.
Paul Heyman Says He Wants a Partner Who Stays Because They Want To, Not Because They Have To
Heyman drew a clear line between choosing a partner and being legally tied to one. What he wants is to wake up beside someone who is there because they want to be, not because marriage makes leaving more complicated.
“If I wake up next to somebody, I want to know that they're there because they chose to be there,” he explained.
For him, the freedom to walk away matters as much as the decision to stay. He isn't saying long-term relationships can't work.
It's the legal obligation, which he believes marriage can bring into them, that he has a problem with. The same goes for any paperwork couples sign before the wedding.
Paul Heyman Reveals His Views on Monogamy, Multiple Relationships and Prenuptial Agreements
Prenuptial agreements don't move Heyman either. His view is that putting financial terms into a relationship turns it into a negotiated deal, and takes away from something that should develop naturally. “A prenup makes it… an arrangement,” he said.
His own relationship history includes long-term partnerships, and some of them overlapped. “I have had many long-term relationships; some of them at the same time,” is how he put it. He confirmed that monogamous relationships are on that list too, so exclusivity isn't what he's pushing back on.
There's a personal side to this as well. Heyman was previously married to Marla Heyman, and reports say they have two children together. The couple separated in early 2000s, though the reasons for the split haven't been publicly established.
Heyman broke into wrestling as an on-screen manager in the late 1980s under the name Paul E. Dangerously, a brash New Yorker character often seen holding a mobile phone.
The name came from a Michael Keaton character in the movie Johnny Dangerously. He later ran Extreme Championship Wrestling in the 1990s, and after ECW closed in 2001 he joined WWE. He was inducted into WWE Hall of Fame on April 5, 2024.
