Lemhannas urges Sabang be developed as international trade hub

Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - The National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) urged the Sabang free port area in Aceh to be developed as an international hub for global trade and an energy shorebase.
“We hope the development of Sabang as an international strategic route can strengthen our national interests,” Lemhannas Governor TB Ace Hasan Syadzily said here on Tuesday.
Syadzily made the statement at a press conference on the sidelines of a national seminar titled “Sabang as a Strategic Gateway for Economic Growth, Maritime Sovereignty, and National Energy Resilience” in Banda Aceh.
According to him, Sabang is a very strategic gateway to Indonesia’s west, especially as it lies on the Strait of Malacca international trade route.
He said Sabang’s potential needs to be revitalized as one of the nation’s strategic strengths that can be developed to bolster international trade.
“The most important thing is to push Sabang to become a hub for international ports and to balance the logistics dominance in the region,” he added.
He pointed out that Sabang is located in the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest international routes in the world, so this geographic potential must be put to good use.
He added that an investment by United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Mubadala Energy has also been planned to make Sabang a shorebase.
“We hope Sabang becomes a living port that can create jobs, drive micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), increase regional revenue, and prosper its own people,” Syadzily said.
He added that the Sabang port infrastructure and free trade zone can strengthen oversight of the territorial waters.
“With Sabang as an international port, we hope it can serve as a reliable energy hub and distribution node on the west side,” he noted.
