#SHOWBIZ: TV3's EKSKLUSIF returns to tackle the Rohingya issue in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: After going off air in 2021, TV3's EKSKLUSIF returns with a special report examining the complex realities facing the Rohingya community in Malaysia, alongside the ongoing challenge of balancing humanitarian aid with national sovereignty.

Titled Rohingya in Malaysia: Between Sovereignty and Humanity, the 30-minute documentary will air tomorrow (Sept 19) at 5.35pm on TV3 and Tonton.

The report explores the community's journey to Malaysia, the everyday hurdles they face, and crucial stories that are often overlooked in public debate.

Many Rohingya refugees endure weeks-long journeys by boat across the Andaman Sea, braving harsh weather, starvation, and the constant threat of human-smuggling syndicates.

Upon arriving in Malaysia, their lack of official legal status restricts their access to formal jobs, education, and basic services.

For this special feature, journalist Nurul Amalina Zainudin visits Selayang to observe the community's living conditions firsthand.

She speaks with residents and experts about the challenges surrounding the Rohingya, including exploitation by cross-border trafficking syndicates across Southeast Asia.

The report also highlights contrasting views within Malaysian society. While many see the Rohingya as victims of persecution needing protection, others express growing concern over national security, public order, and wider social impact.

Key insights are provided by leading experts, including Associate Professor Dr Mashitah Hamidi (head of Universiti Malaya's Migration Research Centre), political sociology professor Dr Novel Lyndon (UKM), and psychological warfare expert Dr Noornirwandy (UiTM).

Members of the local community and Rohingya refugees also share their personal experiences.

At its core, the documentary asks a critical question: how can Malaysia preserve its humanitarian values while firmly protecting its borders, laws, and sovereignty?
