Starfleet Academy season 2 is also the last Star Trek series by Kurtzman's Secret Hideout that will consist of a 10-episode season.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 premiered in January 2026, kicking off Star Trek's 60th anniversary year. Scheduling Starfleet Academy season 2 to hit Paramount+ a little later will likely also mean a later premiere date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' fifth and final season, which is only 6 episodes, thus stretching what remains of Star Trek on Paramount+ further throughout 2027.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has established that one season equals one academic year, which means that the cadets' Starfleet Academy careers will end with their sophomore year. Speaking exclusively to ScreenRant, Bella Shepard described Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 as "crazier... exciting... freeing, and also very meaningful" for her character, Genesis Lythe.

New faces will join Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2, starting with a mysterious new cadet named Keats, played by Ruaridh Aldington, who was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July. Keats will debut in Starfleet Academy season 2's premiere.

Bill Nighy will portray Nyk Ake, the Lanthanite father of Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), in Starfleet Academy season 2. In addition, Rosemarie DeWitt will play Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed and mother to Ocam (Romeo Carere) and Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner).

Sadly, Paul Giamatti won't be back in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 as Nus Braka. Tatiana Maslany also won't reprise Anisha Mir, the mother of Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), in the show's second and final season.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy co-showrunner Noga Landau hinted that season 2's threat isn't just a person but an "impossible dilemma... in a very classic Trek sense." Landau and Alex Kurtzman also confirmed the return of Nova Squadron and an episode that Alex described as "Top Gun in space."

Speaking exclusively to ScreenRant, Landau revealed that Ocam Sadal (Romeo Carere) will play a bigger role in season 2, with more focus on his family drama with his sister, Tarima, and their Betazoid mother, Laytha. The War College's rivalry with Starfleet Academy will also continue.

Nahla's identical twin sister will appear in season 2, with Holly Hunter playing both roles.

Meanwhile, Starfleet Academy's college-aged love stories, like Caleb and Tarima, and the burgeoning romance between Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané) and Darem Reymi (George Hawkins), should continue. Jay-Den is also mentored by The Doctor (Robert Picardo) as a medical student, while the 800-year-old hologram evolves as a parent to Series Acclimation Mil (Kerrice Brooks).

Noga Landau confirmed that sophomore year ends on a cliffhanger, which would be disappointing, as it would leave the series unresolved. However, perhaps Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2's finale may include a coda to give closure to the cadets' stories and the series, like Star Trek: Discovery received.
