Andoni Iraola drops Liverpool team news hint ahead of Tottenham showdown

The Reds take on Spurs in the Carabao Cup third round at Anfield, with both sides looking to improve on their stuttering starts to the new campaign.

Iraola earned his first victory in charge at Ipswich Town last week, winning 2-0 at Portman Road, but fans were frustrated when the Merseysiders were held to a goalless draw by Fulham last time out.

They have a chance to make amends against an out-of-form Spurs side that has not mustered a single goal yet in the top flight.

In terms of team news, there will be a change in net, with Alisson Becker given the night off while Giorgi Mamardashvili is handed a rare start.

Joe Gomez, who has been out injured since the start of pre-season, is also in the frame for a return to action.

“I rate Giorgi very highly, I know him from his years in Spain,” Iraola said on Monday.

“We tried to sign him for Bournemouth before I came here, he is a very good goalkeeper.

“He is going to start tomorrow. Joe is training with the team and is available for tomorrow. It's a matter of deciding how much he can play.”

Iraola has insisted that a brutal run of fixtures, including their opening Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid, will force him into some changes.

He hinted that some young stars could feature at Anfield on Tuesday night to help hand his first-team stars a much-needed rest.

“It's the third game [in seven days],” the Spaniard continued.

“It's the worst scenario in terms of schedule, we haven't been lucky.

“We are in a position where I have to learn who is ready to play and who is ready to rest so their performance level doesn't drop. I had an idea with some of them, but for some of them it is new as they haven't played as many games before.

"I am really happy with the squad. Tomorrow we will see some players we haven't seen yet - to see whether they can help us."
