Ryan Murphy Has Finished a ‘Glee’ Reboot Script & the Original Cast Is ‘Very Enthusiastic’

Here’s what you missed on Glee‘s possible reboot: Ryan Murphy has completed a script, and according to him, many of the original cast members are “enthusiastic” about potentially returning.

At the Wednesday night (Sept. 23) season premiere of American Horror Story, the screenwriter told Entertainment Tonight that he’d “just finished the script an hour ago” when asked for an update on a revamp of the hit musical dramedy series, which he’s previously teased.

“Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something,” he told the outlet. “I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”

Murphy emphasized that “nobody’s read” the script yet, but that he’d “vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, because we were very close when we were making it. So we’ll see.”

Glee ran from 2009 to 2015, launching its Lea Michele-led cast to superstardom. The show has gone down in Billboard chart history for its 207 Billboard Hot 100 entries, a total that only Drake, Taylor Swift and Future have surpassed.

But while the show has had staggering success and an enduring legacy over the past decade off the air, it’s also been marked by multiple tragedies. Leading man Cory Monteith died due to an accidental overdose in 2013, and costar Naya Rivera passed away in 2020 in an accidental drowning while on a boat excursion with her young son.

Murphy first got Gleeks’ hopes up about getting the gang back together in July. “So many young people now watch it, and I’m like, ‘‘’Maybe we should revisit that show,'” he told People. “My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity.’ So yeah, I love that show, and I loved what it became and what it meant to so many people.”
