Godzilla Minus Zero Ending Officially Clarified By Cast As Director Addresses Third Movie Chances

Translate

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

The following contains spoilers for Godzilla Minus ZeroGodzilla Minus Zero stars have clarified the movie's ending, while director Takashi Yamazaki has addressed the possibility of a third installment.

Following 2023's Godzilla Minus One, the sequel reunites Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi. The movie introduces King Ghidorah as a new threat to Japan, while Noriko's mysterious connection to Godzilla becomes central to the battle between the two monsters. However, the movie's final moments leave the Shikishima family's future uncertain.

In an interview with Inverse, Kamiki revealed that Godzilla Minus Zero could have ended with Kōichi and Noriko separating from their adopted daughter Akiko rather than remaining together. Although the couple initially planned to leave Akiko behind to protect her, they ultimately decided to stay together. Kamiki explained:

"I believe there were two paths and two options for this family, whether or not to end up together or to be separated."

The actor emphasized that both endings could have represented different ways of protecting the family, adding that the final version was the outcome he had hoped for. However, Hamabe suggested that the ending is not necessarily a happy one, pointing to the couple's serious expressions as they ride away with Akiko. She explained:

"But I think whether they're looking at slightly different directions, it was a very good ending because what the future holds for each one of them is still a little bit unknown."

The uncertainty also extends to Noriko's connection to Godzilla. The sequel reveals that she survived after what happened in Godzilla Minus One because her body became compatible with Godzilla's regenerative G-Cells. These cells allow her to help lure Godzilla into battle with Ghidorah, but their long-term effects remain unclear.

Yamazaki also revealed that Noriko's mysterious neck marking was not originally intended to become a major plot point. The director explained that the creative team developed the G-Cell storyline to justify her survival in Godzilla Minus One, without initially realizing how important it would become to the sequel.

Hamabe further suggested that Noriko's connection to Godzilla could work both ways, potentially allowing her to sense the monster's presence in the future. The actress described their relationship as potentially symbiotic, raising questions about how Noriko's mutation could affect her if Godzilla returns. This could become an important storyline if a third installment moves forward.

Meanwhile, Yamazaki addressed the possibility of a third installment, admitting that he remains torn over whether to continue the story. Although the director expressed interest in exploring what happens to the characters next, he acknowledged that Godzilla Minus Zero could serve as a fitting conclusion. He stated:

"Part of me thinks, well, maybe it'll be the most graceful to end it right here, and the other part of me wants to see what happens next."

Yamazaki also discussed what another movie could introduce, suggesting that he would be interested in creating an original kaiju rather than bringing back another established Godzilla villain. However, he emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with Toho.

The sequel has seen early box office success, with Godzilla Minus Zero's opening weekend results breaking a 22-year record. Its theatrical performance could strengthen the case for a third installment, although another movie has not been officially announced.

Godzilla Minus Zero is playing in theaters.
