England bat first in opening ODI with Rashid ruled out of series

Kusal Mendis returned from a hamstring injury to captain Sri Lanka in their first ODI against England at the Riverside in Chester-le-Street, but lost the toss and saw his team asked to bowl first.

Mendis missed Sri Lanka's Test series against India in August, and made his comeback for Sinhalese in the Major Clubs T20 Tournament last week while Sri Lanka were being thrashed 3-0 in their T20I series in England. He flew to the UK on Saturday and has since been cleared to return after making it through training unscathed.

"I was also looking to bat first," Mendis said, after losing the toss. "In one-day cricket, we have a very good, balanced side." It will include Sachindu Colombage, the legspinner, who makes his international debut at the age of 28, while Asitha Fernando, Pavan Rathnayake and Janith Liyanage have also come into the side that was thrashed in the T20I leg of the tour.

England named their team on Monday, with Tom Banton becoming Ben Duckett's sixth different opening partner in England's last 17 ODIs due to Jacob Bethell's injury. Adil Rashid went for scans on a hand injury picked up while fielding in Saturday's third T20I on Monday afternoon, so Rehan Ahmed plays as England's main spinner in his place.

"We're going to have a bat," Harry Brook said, after winning the toss. "We feel like [we want to] try and get a decent score on there, and put them under pressure in the second half. [The pitch] looks dry, we've had a warm summer obviously… We'll see how it plays in the first half."

Will Jacks continues in his temporary role as Brook's vice-captain that he started during last week's T20I series, with Bethell - his usual deputy - ruled out until November's tour to Australia through a knee cartilage injury.

The first ODI also marks the first day of Mark Wood's international retirement, which he announced on Tuesday morning. He is working on the game, at his home ground, as a broadcaster for Sky Sports.
