Jeff Dodge (he/him), a published author and graduate of Western Washington University, has been a TV news editor for many years and has had the chance to interview multiple reality show stars, including Randy Jackson, Nick Cannon, Heidi Klum, Mel B and John Cena. Fun Fact: he’s been to every single Idol Live! Tour.

A brand-new Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show is coming as the beloved animated franchise continues to expand years after the original series ended.

Avatar has seen a resurgence in recent years, thanks to Netflix's live-action remake and the creation of Avatar Studios, which focuses on bringing more content to fans than ever before. First up was the movie Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender over the summer, and Avatar: Seven Havens just premiered on October 9.

Now another show is on the way. At New York Comic Con, franchise creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko announced Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, a new animated series for Paramount+. Konietzko is on board as the showrunner, with Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios producing.

Kuruk replaces Aang as the main character: a rebellious teen Avatar who rejects traditions that have lasted thousands of years and forges his own path. He sets out on an epic adventure, learning all four elements and helping the world in the only way he knows how. Along the way, he must outmaneuver pirates, spirits, and his angry teacher.

A premiere date hasn't been announced yet, but attendees at Avatar's NYCC panel got a first look at Kuruk and pet Nikik, the new Avatar version of Appa. First-look images and artwork from the series have also been released:

Additionally, it was announced that Avatar: Seven Havens was renewed for Books 3 and 4, and the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast teased upcoming content for Avatar: Seven Havens with interviews from the cast and creator.

The original Avatar: The Last Airbender series may have aired for only three seasons, but it quickly became a beloved, acclaimed series with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and won an Emmy and a Peabody. The four-season sequel, The Legend of Korra, continued the franchise's success in the 2010s.

Netflix brought the animated story to live action with its 2024 adaptation. Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3, the final installment, has already been filmed and will be released sometime in 2027.

The franchise got back to its animation roots this year with Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender and Avatar: Seven Havens. The former received critical acclaim, is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% critic score, and was nominated for Favorite Kids Movie at the Kids' Choice Awards.

The first three episodes of Avatar: Seven Havens just dropped on Paramount+ (with new episodes coming out every Friday), and the series is already getting overwhelmingly positive reviews, with a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now Avatar: The Last Airbender fans have Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos to look forward to in the future.
