Nguru dominates Yobe Spelling Bee, wins all three top prizes

DAMATURU — Nguru Local Government Area has emerged dominant at the third edition of the Yobe State Spelling Bee Competition, producing all three top winners.

Zainab Mohammed Grema of Reading Model School, Nguru, emerged winner of the Yobe Spelling Bee 3.0.

Mohammed Ishaq Madaki of Government Day Junior Secondary School, Nglewa, Nguru Local Government Area, emerged first runner-up, while Aisha Mohammed Alah of Honesty Secondary School, Nguru, took the second runner-up position.

The result means all three trophies in this year’s competition will go to Nguru Local Government Area.

The competition featured 146 students from schools across Yobe State, with contestants spelling more than 1,100 words throughout the various stages.

The Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Dr Muhammad Goje, who monitored the competition from its commencement on August 24 to the grand finale on August 26, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening educational initiatives that provide children with opportunities to learn, participate and excel.

Goje spoke shortly after the final stage of the competition, saying the participation of students from across the state demonstrated the importance of creating an enabling environment for every child to showcase their abilities.

“All Yobe children have equal rights and deserve an enabling environment to participate and excel. We thank Governor Buni for providing the enabling environment, and government will ensure that this and many other educational initiatives are strengthened,” he said.

The competition provided the participants with an opportunity to test their spelling abilities, build confidence and compete with students from different schools across the state.

Although three students emerged with the top positions, the organisers described all 146 contestants as winners for successfully participating in the competition.

The event also underscored the importance of providing children with equal opportunities and an enabling environment to participate in educational activities.

The state government said it would continue to support and strengthen the spelling bee and other educational initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for children across Yobe State.
