Kyle MacLachlan memoir details Laura Dern relationship breakdown while dating ‘Twin Peaks’ co-star Lara Flynn Boyle
Kyle MacLachlan has recalled his relationship with Laura Dern, as well as having an affair with actor Lara Flynn Boyle, in his new memoir.
The actor is famous for his collaborations with the late David Lynch, most notably on the series Twin Peaks, which ran from 1990-91, followed by a film spin-off and a 2017 return. He is also known for his work in Lynch’s adaptation of Dune, Pixar’s Inside Out films, and the TV show Fallout.
His book, Fictional Selves, is released on September 29 and looks back on his career, which includes his relationships with fellow actors Laura Dern and Lara Flynn Boyle. MacLachlan first worked with Dern on Lynch’s 1986 movie Blue Velvet, recalling in an extract shared by People: “She had a certain allure, and she’s gorgeous.”
The pair dated, but MacLachlan admitted falling for Boyle, with whom he worked on Twin Peaks, while he was still in a relationship with Dern. “[Boyle] is sexy and edgy, a tough girl from Chicago, the antithesis of anyone I’ve ever been with,” he wrote. “I was away on location [in the Pacific Northwest] and feeling, This is my town, let me show you some of the cool spots. We fell into this relationship, and it just destroyed the relationship with Laura. Not my best moment. I did not handle that well, especially for Laura.” He concluded, “thank God, over time, we’ve healed.”

In March, Kyle MacLachlan revealed that he believes his career was affected by working with David Lynch, as other directors seemed resistant to cast him. “I can be the weird outsider with David [Lynch], but I’m not the weird outsider in a regular movie, that didn’t make sense to me” he told The Louis Theroux Podcast. “I said, I’m not that person. So, I just was like, I’m kind of between two worlds.”
