Fire Country Shatters Hopes For Gabriela’s Return In Season 5

Fire Country season 5’s trailer introduces a development that makes it extremely unlikely for Gabriela to return. While as focused on the Leone family drama as it was on firefighting, Fire Country seasons 1 to 3 also spent a lot of time on Manny and Gabriela’s relationship, which proved the driving force behind much of the procedural drama’s tension. Whether Manny’s disapproval of Gabriela’s choices involved Bode or her career changes, it massively influenced his storyline. Fire Country season 5 introducing one new character seems to be moving beyond Gabriela’s role in the show at last.

Losing both Vince Leone and Gabriela at the beginning of Fire Country season 4 heavily impacted the firefighting drama, so profoundly that regaining any semblance of normalcy was difficult for the characters and their story arcs alike in season 4. Between Fire Country season 4’s ratings dropping as Sheriff Country’s boomed and Bode’s storyline immediately involving another relationship, just like Manny’s, it’s safe to say that Fire Country season 4 didn’t have the chance to thoroughly explore the themes that made it great, namely family tensions exacerbated by the characters working in highly dangerous situations as firefighters.

Fire Country season 5’s trailer raises the hopes that the firefighting drama may go back to tackle what it does best in the upcoming season. This is exemplified by the introduction of Angel, Manny’s nephew, whom the Edgewater Battalion Chief seems to vehemently oppose. The tension between Manny and Angel nevertheless makes a Gabriela return in Fire Country season 5 wholly unlikely, as Angel is poised to take over her role in the firefighting drama.

Angel's Arrival Puts Manny In A Position To Grow In Fire Country Season 5

Ever since his introduction in Fire Country’s series premiere, Manny’s role was one of hope, as he truly believed that the Three Rock inmate firefighters could make a difference during calls and in their lives through the California Conservation Camp Program. Although Manny moved on from leading Three Rock’s inmate firefighters after Fire Country season 1, he continued to believe in second chances, even when Eve didn’t trust the new, young inmates to be able to thrive at Three Rock in Fire Country season 4. However, Manny’s reaction to meeting Angel in the trailer wholly contrasts with his established beliefs.

In it, Manny can be seen warning Eve about Angel, as well as Eve responding that “no one’s the worst thing they’ve ever done.” The sentiment Eve shared has always been at the foundation of Manny’s every action, a hope he instilled in others and himself when he ended up once again at Three Rock in Fire Country season 3. However, he doesn’t seem to give Angel the benefit of the doubt that he gives everybody else, which means that the trailer effectively introduces Manny’s biggest challenge for Fire Country season 5.

Manny’s adverse reaction to Eve’s lack of acceptance of his warning shows that his relationship with his nephew had been so hostile to push him to renege on his core tenets. This puts Manny in a unique position to grow in Fire Country season 5, as he will need to either face that his assumptions about Angel are wrong or go against one of his cardinal beliefs. Angel’s arrival and his role in relation to Manny also make a Gabriela return counterproductive in Fire Country season 5, at least in relation to Manny’s story.

Gabriela's Exit Deprived Fire Country Season 4 Of Manny's Most Interesting Storylines

Gabriela’s exit in Fire Country season 4 made sure that Manny wouldn’t be involved in any consequential family drama. His new relationship with Camille, along with Roberta coming back into his life due to her illness, tried to give Manny family troubles, but none were as far-reaching as Gabriela’s prolonged fights with Manny had been in Fire Country seasons 1 through 3. Their disagreements lasted for many episodes and severely impacted their relationship and them individually, influencing their personal storylines because of how strong their emotions and beliefs were about one another.

Nonetheless, the strain their disagreements put on Manny often led to breakthroughs. Indeed, Gabriela being as headstrong as Manny meant he had to face his shortcomings and patch up the relationship if he wanted to have one with his daughter. The tension between Angel and Manny that Fire Country season 5’s trailer showed promises a similar struggle, one that can finally continue Manny’s character development, thus letting him shine as a result.
