Anambra LG polls peaceful as APGA targets 21/21 victory

ONITSHA — The ongoing local government chairmanship and councillorship elections in Anambra State were largely peaceful on Saturday, with voters turning out across polling units in the state’s 21 local government areas.

Unlike previous elections, when ballot materials were reportedly delivered late to some polling units, the materials for Saturday’s exercise arrived early at most locations visited.

At St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Isingwu, Oraifite Ward 1 in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, the APGA chairmanship candidate, Hon. Ifeanyi Onuchukwu, cast his vote at about 10:30am shortly after accreditation.

The exercise was conducted peacefully, with voters participating without reported disruption.

At the Ekwusigo Local Government Secretariat in Ozubulu, officials of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) were receiving results from polling units across the council area.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Onuchukwu described the process as credible and worthy of emulation.

Also speaking, the Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, expressed optimism that APGA would emerge victorious, citing what he described as the party’s performance and impact across the state.

At the Onitsha South Local Government Secretariat in Fegge, collation of results was still ongoing as of 3pm.

The APGA chairmanship candidate, Chief Peter Mofunanya, and the incumbent Secretary to the Local Government, Paul Onuachalla, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election, describing it as peaceful.

They also expressed optimism that the results would favour APGA as the collation continued.
