The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Saturday said there is no threat of a tsunami affecting the Philippines after a strong earthquake occurred in the waters near Vanuatu.

In its Tsunami Information No. 1, PHIVOLCS said, "Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter."

"There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," PHIVOLCS added.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the waters near Vanuatu at a depth of 10 km on Saturday morning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. —KG, GMA News
