Today (29 September) the sequel to Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Dungeons II has been released, and you might be wondering how to play this hack and slash with your friends.

The game combines Minecraft aesthetics with the feel of a dungeon crawler in a fun spin-off that expands the Minecraft franchise. And with the announcement of The Sift realm also coming to vanilla Minecraft as the first new dimension in more than 14 years, you and your friends might want to explore The Sift firsthand in Minecraft Dungeons II.

The short answer – yes! Minecraft Dungeons II has cross-play from day one, and you can play with your friends across PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

This comes alongside local co-op on the same console, which you can also mix with online play to join friends elsewhere.

Considering the original Minecraft Dungeons also included full cross-play, it makes sense that its sequel would also support this feature.

How does Minecraft Dungeons II cross-play work?

Cross-play in Minecraft Dungeons II supports up to four players in a session, with options to connect with your friends or random players.

If you want to simply join a party to fight alongside with, then the game has a matchmaking mechanic that will place you into a session.

However, if you want to play directly with familiar faces, then you can connect to games using a party code.

Bear in mind that for online play, console players will need a Microsoft account as well as a paid subscription for online access. Linked Microsoft accounts allow for cross-progression, so you and your party will never lose progress!
